Overview
Routing profiles allow you to define how the routing engine calculates travel time and distance for each vehicle in your fleet. Instead of applying a single, generic routing behaviour to all vehicles, you can create named profiles with specific parameters — such as transport mode, speed settings, traffic preferences, and road restrictions — and assign each profile to the appropriate vehicles.
This means, for example, that a bicycle can follow cycling paths while a truck avoids low bridges and weight-restricted roads, all within the same optimisation run.
⚠️ Routing profiles are currently available for platforms using HERE as their routing provider. If you are not sure which provider your platform uses ask your Customer Success Manager (CSM).
What Does a Routing Profile Include?
Each routing profile is a named set of parameters that influence how routes and travel times are computed. A profile can include:
| Parameter | Description |
| Transport mode | The type of vehicle used for routing (e.g. car, truck, bicycle, pedestrian). This determines which roads are accessible. |
| Speed settings | Adjustments to the speed factor used during route calculation, allowing you to account for vehicles that move faster or slower than default values. |
| Traffic settings | Whether traffic data is taken into account, and which type (live, historical, or automatic). |
| Barriers & road restrictions | Specific road types or areas to avoid (e.g. toll roads, ferries, roads under construction, low-emission zones). |
ℹ️ Routing profiles do not include break settings, spatial clustering preferences, or optimisation objectives. These are configured separately in your optimisation settings.
Setting Up Routing Profiles
Step 1 – Access the Routing Profiles configuration
Routing profiles are configured in your platform's optimisation settings. Navigate to:
Administration > Platform > Fleet > Routing profiles tab
⚠️ The HERE Configuration must be enabled on your platform before routing profiles can be set up. Contact your Customer Success Manager if this is not yet activated.
Step 2 – Create a routing profile
- Click Add a routing profile using the plus symbol
- Give your profile a clear, descriptive name (e.g. "Urban Van", "Heavy Truck", "Bicycle Delivery").
- Configure the parameters for this profile:
- Vehicle type and Transport mode: Select the vehicle category that best matches the vehicle this profile will be used for.
- Profile traffic: Define whether traffic data should be considered when calculating routes and travel times.
- Default: Traffic data is considered.
- Disabled: All traffic data, including long-term closures, is ignored.
- Routing mode: Fast/Short (Optimize for speed vs distance)
- Avoid features: Enable restrictions for specific road types the vehicle should avoid (e.g. toll roads, ferries, roads under construction, carpool lanes).
- Speed factor (if applicable): Adjust the speed factor to increase or reduce the calculated travel time for this vehicle type.
- Save the profile.
Step 3 – Assign the profile to a vehicle
Once your routing profiles are created, you can link each one to the relevant vehicles in your fleet:
- Go to Administration > Fleet.
- Open the vehicle you want to configure.
- In the vehicle settings, select the appropriate Routing profile from the dropdown.
- Save your changes.
How Routing Profiles Affect Optimisation
When an optimisation is launched, Urbantz uses the routing profile linked to each vehicle to compute the travel time and distance between all relevant points. This ensures that the optimiser generates routes that are realistic and appropriate for each vehicle type.
The same routing profile is also used for real-time routing, so that the route shown to the driver matches the assumptions made during optimisation.
Limitations
- Routing profiles are currently supported for the HERE optimizer only.
- HERE supports a maximum of 5 routing profiles per optimisation request. If your fleet requires more than 5 distinct profiles in a single optimisation run, the excess vehicles will fall back to a default profile.
- Routing profiles apply to the routing calculation only. They do not override other vehicle constraints such as capacity, skills, or working hours.
- Parameters such as spatial clustering and break configuration are not part of routing profiles and must be configured separately in the optimisation settings.
